Boat covers serve to protect a boat from harmful effects of the elements. As boats go on extended hours outdoors, the sea water, sun and wind can easily contribute to depreciation, it can even accelerate it if left out in the open without any form of protection. Boat covers are therefore essential in the preservation and care of boats.

In purchasing boat covers, it is important to determine the boat size. Manufacturers sell standard sizes however, if an owner had his boat taylor-made, standard sizes will not fit their boats perfectly. They would need to provide the exact measurements so they will have custom boat covers that will fit and provide the best protection.

Taking measurements requires precision. To be able to get the closest fit to one’s boat the following are some measures one can undertake.

When measuring one’s boat, it is advisable to use a tape that does not stretch or a non-elastic tape such as a steel tape or duct tape. This is so that the exact measurements can be taken. One end of the measuring tape can be held in place by the non-elastic tape.

From here, one must find the center length. To achieve that, one must start taking measures from the tip of the bow to the center of the stern or the back part of the boat. If the boat is equipped with any extensions such as a trolling motor, platform, swim deck, fishing deck, sun deck, etc, one may add their length to the centerline dimension if one desires to have these areas covered. Which is highly advisable if one intends to preserve the boat extensions as well.

Next step is to find the beam width. To do this, one needs to find the widest point of his or her boat which is usually the middle and widest part of the boat. When measuring beam width, one must remember to include the rub-rail. Most covers will fit boats with a beam and center-line measurement plus or minus six inches.

It is important to remember to add one foot to the center-line length if one’s boat has rails exceeding six inches in height and to add one foot to the center-line length for trolling motor and other extensions.

Other factors that can be made according to the buyer’s specification are the colors. One can opt for the bright, funky colors such as oranges, yellows, pinks, and one can also opt to have the ones in solid colors such as navy blue and green that matches their boats color well.

Just about every taylor-made boat cover manufacturer offer services that include customizing boat covers since not all boats are of the same size and dimension. Some even provide these at a discounted price. After measuring one’s boat properly, all he or she needs to do is to send the measurements to his or her manufacturer and he or she will have his or her custom boat cover in no time. He should also specify the type of material he wants his boat cover to be made of. For outdoor uses, it would be best to get one that is made of vinyl as this is more resistant to air, heat and water. However, most manufacturers opt to use Sunbrella fabrics as these are more fade-resistant and lasts longer compared to the other fabrics.
