BOAT COVERS: CUSTOM MADE BOAT COVER FOR CUSTOM MADE BOATS

Like most investments, it does not cost little to acquire a boat. A purchase could set one back anywhere from four hundred dollars to a million or so dollars depending on the boat type. It could be as simple as a small fishing boat or as extravagant as a luxurious yacht. Nowadays, boats can be rented out. Some marinas offer exactly these services. However, if one is a die-hard fan of boating or simply serious about the hobby, it would be best to acquire an own boat as the accumulated rental fees would eventually add up to the same amount.

With owning a boat, it would be best to purchase a boat cover as well. This is to protect the boat from dust and all the other harmful effects of the wind, sun and water. These environmental hazards will eventually speed up the depreciation of the boat. Accumulated dust on the engine for instance will effect the boat’s performance and may be very dangerous in the long run if left unattended.

There are a number of boat covers. It could be made of cotton, polyester, vinyl, canvas, or a combination of any or more of these materials. Materials from which a boat cover is made of vary depending on the intended use of the covers. A boat cover made of vinyl for instance, is best used if the boat is to be docked outdoors while one that is made of cotton is better suited for garage storage.

Manufacturers sell boat covers at standard sizes since most boats are sold at predetermined sizes. However, if one’s boat do not follow a manufacturer’s standard size as it custom built, one should have his boat cover custom built as well. Most manufacturers offer services such as custom made boat covers. These may cost more or cheaper than the standard sizes depending on the specific boat size and whatever an owner wants to have added on his or her boat cover.

For a custom made boat cover, one must provide the manufacturer the exact measurements of his or her boat. If the boat came with a brochure indicating its specific size and dimension, one can merely provide this information to the manufacturer. However, if the boat did not come with a brochure, or even if it did, it would be best to get the exact measurements. The steps in getting the boat’s size specifications are relatively easy.

When getting the measurement of one’s boat, it is best to use a tape that does not stretch or a non-elastic tape such as a steel tape or duct tape.

The next step is for an owner should find the center length. In finding the center length, one should start taking measures from the tip of the bow to the center of the stern or the back part of the boat. If the boat is equipped with any extensions such as a sun deck, a fishing area, etc, one may add their length to the centerline dimension if one wants to have these areas covered.

Next step is to find the beam width. To do this, one needs to find the widest point of his or her boat. This is usually the center part of the boat. When measuring beam width, one must remember to include the rub-rail. Most covers will fit boats with a beam and center-line measurement plus or minus six inches.

One must also remember to add one foot to the center-line length if one’s boat has rails exceeding six inches in height and to add one foot to the center-line length for trolling motor.
